What is Barcode Generator?

A barcode is useful only when its symbology, data length, check digit, dimensions, quiet zones, and print quality match the system that will scan it. Code 128 can encode a broad set of characters, while EAN-13 and UPC-A represent fixed-length retail numbers with validation rules. A visually plausible symbol is not automatically a valid retail identifier.

This generator provides a browser-based way to create and inspect supported barcode graphics, then export SVG or PNG for mockups, internal labels, and controlled tests. It does not allocate official product numbers or certify that a symbol meets a retailer, carrier, healthcare, or regulatory specification.

Barcode errors are often discovered at the scanner

A scanner applies exact rules and may reject it. Retail identifiers also need to be assigned through the appropriate organization; generating bars does not create ownership of a GTIN or UPC.

Physical output adds more failure modes. Scaling an image non-proportionally, cropping the quiet zones, printing with low contrast, placing bars across a curve, or exporting a tiny raster can make a valid value unreadable. The intended printer, label stock, surface, and scanning distance should guide the asset dimensions.

Human-readable digits are a review aid but do not replace a scan test. A design handoff can accidentally swap the displayed text while retaining different encoded data, or apply layout effects that change bar widths. Validation should include both the value and the rendered symbol.

Validate the data, preserve geometry, and test the final label

Choose the symbology required by the receiving system before entering a value. Use Code 128 for supported internal alphanumeric workflows, and use EAN-13 or UPC-A only with correctly assigned numeric identifiers. Let the tool validate length and check-digit rules instead of padding or trimming data to make it fit.

Prefer SVG for design and print workflows because it preserves sharp bar geometry at different sizes. Use PNG when a destination cannot accept vector files, but export enough resolution and avoid later resampling. Maintain dark bars on a light, plain background and leave the quiet areas around the symbol untouched.

Test the exported asset with the actual scanner or mobile app, then test again after it has been placed in the final label layout and printed. Record the encoded value beside the asset during review so operations, design, and inventory teams are validating the same identifier.
